How to discreetly stitch a broken seam on a T-shirt, darn a worn toe, assemble runaway loops and sew a hole on a sweater and other life hacks to repair knitwear - in our selection.
1. How to sew a hole on the toe with an invisible seam: master class
A hole in the toe or heel is one of the most common “damage” to the toe. It happens that at hand there are no threads of a suitable color - for example, in a country house or on a trip. This life hack is about how to sew a knitwear with a seam in which the thread is not visible on the front side, so you can use any color. In addition, special devices are not needed here, as when darned. Please note: this method is not suitable for too conspicuous places. Rather, it is a life hack to quickly fix a torn one.
You will need:
- a manual needle;
- threads.
Work sequence:
1. Put the thread in the needle, make a small knot. Do not turn the product inside out. Through the hole, pass the needle inside out of the knitwear and leave the bundle there.
2. Begin to sew up a hole, grabbing one edge at a time. Proceed as shown in the diagram.

3. When the seam is finished, pull the thread. Pull to the extent that the thread goes into the seam, becoming invisible from the front, but does not tighten the seam. You can always stretch the seam to the sides to straighten the thread a little. Take the needle inside out and fasten the thread.

2. How to sew a burst stitch with a hidden seam: master class
In this case, the blind stitch from the previous life hack is also used. A detailed master class on how to perform this seam, read here.
The method is suitable for repairing a broken or torn machine line where it is not very convenient to sew a hole from the inside. For example, this way you can sew a hole in the lining, on the inside pocket, and so on. By the way, with the same seam you can repair the torn off hem of trousers or skirts.
You will need:
- a manual needle;
- threads.
Work sequence:
Suture as shown in the photo or on the life hack diagram above. At the end, gently tighten the thread.

3. How to sew a small hole on knitwear: a master class
We already wrote about how to quietly sew a small hole in a thin knitwear (a master class with a video here). The same workshop is about how to repair thicker knitwear, for example, a knitted sweater, pullover, sweater. In the same way, you can sew a thick knitted sock or any knitted thing.
You will need:
- thin threads in the color of the thing;
- a manual needle.
Work sequence:
1. Turn things inside out. Thread the needle. Start to sew small stitches across the direction of the threads in the knitwear. Move up and down, threading to the end of the hole.
2. Now go with the same stitches perpendicularly along the direction of the knit threads. With each movement of the needle and bind it with the stitches laid, and grab some material of the thing being repaired.
3. As a result, the work should look inside out, as in the photo below. Fasten the thread with a few small neat stitches and cut the thread. Done.

4. How to raise loops and sew a hole on a knitwear near the seam: master class
Such a hole near the seam is a fairly common occurrence. This workshop is about how to carefully lift the hinges and repair the sweater.
You will need:
- a hook of a suitable size;
- threads suitable for repaired knitwear in thickness, color and composition;
- a needle;
- safety pin.
Work sequence:
1. Raise the runaway loops one hook at a time.
2. Raised chains can be fixed with a safety pin so that they do not run away again.
3. Having lifted all the runaway chains of loops, close them with a hook, sequentially stretching one loop through the other.
4. Secure the last loop with a thread with a needle.
5. Sew the hole carefully with the same thread.

To repair knitted knitted items, it is good to use a knitted seam - the work is especially inconspicuous if you have threads from which the thing is made. Knitted seam is good when the hole did not arise due to scuffing, but, for example, because of the clutch, when the thread in the knitwear is pulled and torn.
You will need:
- a hook of a suitable size (if you need to raise the runaway loops);
- well-fitting threads;
- the needle.
Work sequence:
1. Raise the runaway loops with a hook.
2. Pass the thread into the needle and start collecting loops as shown in the pictures. Here, a contrasting thread is specially taken so that the principle of operation is understood.
3. Having collected all the free loops, bring the thread to the wrong side. Fasten it by passing between the loops of material, as shown in the photo. Take the scraps of the torn thread to the wrong side.

6. How to darn a hole: three ways
Photo: thedapperbun.com
Darning is a classic way to repair. Helps with holes on knitwear and fabrics. The degree of invisibility of the repair depends on the size of the hole, the material itself (it is very difficult to make an inconspicuous darning on silk or other delicate fabric) and dexterity. Most often, darn is used to repair things in not-so-noticeable places. But its main function - getting rid of a hole - it performs.
You will need:
- threads in fabric color;
- a manual needle;
- "fungus" or other darn device.
Here is a classic darn diagram:
Before starting work, you can walk with a thread around the hole so as not to stretch the material with a darn. In the process, you can not touch this thread and then pull it out.
Special darn for jerseys:
First, auxiliary threads are pulled with a thin thread, then darn is put on them with a thread suitable for the repaired canvas.
Another darning option for knitwear:
First, the threads are laid along the threads of the canvas, then darn is performed.

7. Decorative darn: ideas

This method is a cross between a darn and embroidery. It allows you to sew up a hole so that the place of repair turns into a decorative element that adorns clothes. You can first darn the hole with threads in color, and then embroider from above. The second option is to glue the adhesive-based material from the inside and embroider it. The third is to glue a piece of fabric onto the "cobweb" as a patch, to embroider on a patch. The fourth option, for virtuosos, is to simultaneously darn a hole and form an embroidery pattern.
