Coco Chanel claimed that she needed only four pairs of shoes to travel the world. And it's not about different types of shoes, but about the four color schemes of the boats, which have become a symbol of the fashion house.
Elegant beige pumps with a black toe and an open heel were born in 1957. When creating the model, Chanel, obviously, was guided by one of her cornerstone beliefs that shoes are the final touch of elegance.
The origins of the legend
Classic two-tone boats, brought to life by Raymond Massaro, the successor to the dynasty of the famous French shoe house Massaro, who collaborates with the fashion house Chanel to this day, have a number of winning advantages: firstly, the black toe visually shortened the foot, while neutral the beige color of the boats visually stretched the leg, and secondly, Chanel decided that the most comfortable and elegant for this model would be the average heel with a height of 5-6 cm, which, of course, makes these shoes suitable even for a troublesome day which you are going to hold "on your feet." The famous Coco herself led a very spontaneous lifestyle, alternating social events with sudden travels and adventures, therefore, in addition to other advantages, two-tone boats can also boast amazing practicality.
Chanel today
Of course, Chanel, being the creator of this iconic shoe, was not a pioneer.Two-tone men's shoes and women's boots appeared long before Mademoiselle Coco - back in the 19th century. Men's shoes made of leather in two contrasting colors, intended for spectators and participants in horse racing and sports, migrated from men's fashion to women's. Since the acquisition of its finished, legendary format, this couple has undergone various changes under the influence of fashionable moods: in the 60s of the last century, the heel became wider and the toe square, well, and under the influence of Karl Lagerfeld, who headed the fashion house in 1983, the two-color line of shoes was replenished with a wide variety of types, from clogs and a high platform to ankle boots, but the very first, classic, beige-black pair of boats will forever remain the most beloved and most popular.
