Sit back, pour tea into your favorite cup, and get ready to immerse yourself in huggyo. This is a magical way to get rid of stress and sadness, overcome a long winter and maintain a good mood.

Hyuggyo is called the secret of Danish happiness - however, in recent years, the whole world speaks of hyuggyo. Tell us why.

What is hyuggyo and why do we need it?

photo: @ tamkingcreates Imagine: a warm plaid, cozy pants, a soft sweater. The muffled light of burning candles, a cup of delicious cocoa. In the oven - dinner, in a vase - cookies. Behind the drawn curtains - rain, snow, wind, cold winter sun or early wet twilight. Favorite chair. A good book - or a leisurely conversation in the company of good friends, with your family. Feel it? This is hyugyo. One of the main world trends of recent years, the magical "recipe for happiness" that helps to overcome stress and fatigue, and seasonal longing, and other adversities.
The art of creating coziness, a warm, calm atmosphere, even serenity, the ability to enjoy simple, good, sweet heart things - something like this can describe the meaning of the word "hygge". This concept, like the trend, came from Denmark, which regularly occupies the first lines in the ranking of the countries of the world in terms of UN happiness. The word hygge itself (from the Norwegian "well-being, welfare") appeared in Danish three centuries ago. Today it is a philosophy and a way of life. Being a huggelig (hyggelig, that is, "possessing the essence of a huggö") means kindness to yourself and people, a pleasant atmosphere around you, the ability to stop and give yourself a break. In this century, all this is more relevant than ever - which is probably why the hyuggyo is gaining popularity.

Let’s add happiness: we create hyuggyo in our home and life

"The main thing in huggies is to make the most of ... ordinary days," writes Professor Mike Viking, founder and director of the famous Copenhagen Institute for the Study of Happiness. Viking is the author of several books and publications about the hyggyo. Here are the recommendations of the professor and other researchers on the topic of how to feel and create hyugyo:

Dim the light

photo: @ mirabella_alA better - turn off the electric lamps altogether and light a few candles (of course, not forgetting the fire safety!). The "loud" solemn illumination of the adherents of the hyuggy is not in honor. If you still need light, to create the right atmosphere, forget about the chandelier and turn on some dim lamps - a floor lamp, a night lamp, a sconce or a table lamp. It is better to refuse from fluorescent lamps with a "cold" artificial shade at all - as well as from modern spots built into the ceiling. Ideally, the light should be soft and warm, similar to that given by a fireplace, a bonfire, an old street lamp or the same candle.

Add comfort to the interior

photo: @ becca_rose_homeOne of the best ways to “soften” and make more comfortable even the most ascetic interior is textile. Soft blackout curtains on the windows or as a canopy, covering the bed from drafts and unnecessary light. Carpets and floor mats. Pillows of all shapes, colors and sizes - so that sitting (and lying down) was comfortable for everyone. Covers for armchairs and a sofa from fabric, pleasant to the touch. Poufs and interior baskets. You can find and buy all this, or you can do it yourself, adding personality and warmth to your home.

Do not forget about clothes

photo: @ egeria_official In fashion in the huggyo style, the main thing is not compliance with the latest trends, but comfort and quality. "Hairpins" or "skinny" not giving a sigh - "anti-hyuggyo". “Happy” clothes are oversized coats and down jackets, wide loose trousers and skirts, soft cozy knitwear. This is the naturalness of materials, workmanship and respect for yourself and your body. "Danish fashion is concise, elegant and effortless. It combines the best qualities of huggyo and minimalist functional design, "writes Viking.

Choose quality

photo: @ myhomeinswitzerland It is better to wait, save - and get a better thing that will last longer than choosing a fake for something "designer" or something that is obviously doomed to be in the trash after a few months. The same applies to home-made furnishings and clothes: it is better to try to do everything carefully and correct mistakes on time - then the finished thing will please you longer and become a real thing for pride.

Give yourself time for your favorite activities

photo: @ sparklingheart_ Board games, cycling or skiing, leisurely searching for books in a large bookstore or small second-hand bookstore - you can give a cosiness and a feeling of happiness an activity that really suits you, whether it’s painting walls or playing with a dog on the playground . Needlework in this case is “especially huggyo”. To do sewing or embroidery, knitting or quilting, to build a new box or decorate the old one with decoupage - the main thing is to find time for your favorite hobby and "meditate" on your creations, forgetting about everything.

Cook and eat at home

photo: @madenimitliv "High consumption of meat, confectionery and coffee in Denmark is directly related to huggies," writes Mike Viking. "One of its prerequisites is to be kind to yourself, pamper yourself and give yourself and others the opportunity to deviate from the principles for a short time a healthy lifestyle. Sweets are h хggyo. Pastries are hюгggyo. Coffee and hot chocolate are also. But carrot sticks aren’t very good. " Add: ideally, let it be the baking that you prepared yourself, and coffee, also brewed with your own hands. By the way, the ingredients for homemade food are also worth choosing the best - high-quality and natural. Yes, drinks are especially important for huggies. Good tea brewed in Turkish coffee, cocoa with marshmallows, grog, mulled wine or homemade compote - enjoy alone or call friends.

Fresh air is important

photo: @ shanshantel07 "A bit of bad weather never stopped the Vikings from raiding, we still don’t let her stop us. For us, being active means being alive and spending as much time in the air as in the room," says Signe Johansen in his book The Secrets of Life in the Hyuggyo Style. Johansen urges not to reduce the hyuggyu “only to a cake, candles and cozy furnishings”, but - to devote more time to walks, or even just to stay in the fresh air, whether it is an outing into a forest or a picnic in a city park.

Let yourself be yourself

photo: @ kitchenstories_officialWith all the “material” rules being followed, the main thing in the hyuggy is still not things, but the state itself. Surrounding yourself with a hюгggё atmosphere, it is equally important to allow yourself a break from work and fuss. Give at least an evening a week to calm conversations with relatives and friends - without watching blockbusters and TV shows, at rest, perhaps even without background music. Or from time to time to devote a day to yourself, silence, doing nothing and your favorite book. Goodwill, gratitude for what is already there, the ability to feel joy in the current moment, to be "here and now" are integral components of the Danish "recipe for happiness." However, both ancient knowledge and modern science insist on this, of happiness in general.

Hyugyo Ideas: DIY

Thick yarn blanket

A super-warm blanket made of very thick yarn is knitted with the same thick knitting needles or directly with your hands in just a few hours.

Garlands in the interior

Electric garlands on the walls or on the window will simultaneously become the decoration of the interior, and a source of soft warm light, which is so much appreciated in Hyugyo.

Pillows and pillowcases

Photo: polywrld.tumblr.com
"The more pillows - the better!" - one of the mottoes of the hüggö. For a change, you can sew several pillowcases on each pillow and change them according to your mood.

"Clothes" for the mug

Photo: blog.furnishmyway.com
“Dress” your favorite mug in a case, knitted or sewn from soft warm material with your own hands. Hyuggyo will add tea to this, plus the drink will stay hot longer.

Fireplace with candles

Photo: blog.furnishmyway.com
In modern apartments, you rarely see a real fireplace - however, you can replace it with a fireplace of candles. Equip a niche near one of the walls, decorating it with fire-resistant materials (for example, natural stone) and light a candle fire in it - large candles will not only shine, but also warm.

Canopy over the bed

The canopy above the bed can be constructed from a large rectangular cut of fabric: translucent or more dense.

Master Class: Knitted Pillows

The once-loved sweater that you no longer wear can be turned into huggy pillowcases for decorative pillows. Two medium-sized pillowcases will come out of one sweater.
Photo: stonegableblog.com
You will need a knitted sweater, sewing threads, pins and buttons. Option: knit the necessary details for pillowcases or crochet or use a fabric that is pleasant to the touch - wool, soft velveteen, bike, boucle, velvet.

Step 1

Photo: stonegableblog.com
Wash the sweater (or knit parts) and dry by spreading it on a flat surface. Turn inside out. In the case of a sweater, connect its front and back, chipping them with pins, immediately outlining a rectangle in size of the future pillowcase.

Step 2

Photo: stonegableblog.com
Cut a rectangle from the sweater along the outlined lines. Leave the bottom edge with elastic or closed loops intact. The result was a blank for the first pillowcase. Sew it on three sides, leaving the edge with the elastic free.

Step 3

Photo: stonegableblog.com
Turn out the pillowcase. Put it on the pillow. Along the edge with an elastic band, capturing both layers of the pillowcase, sew several buttons. If you want the pillowcase to be easy to remove and put on, cut and stitch the loops on one side of the pillowcase, and sew the buttons on the other side.

Step 4

A second pillowcase will require sleeves. Mark on each sleeve the same rectangle, cut, fold with the front sides inwards and sew, leaving one side free. The edge of this pillowcase will need to be worked up by tucking and hemming it, or the pillowcase is sewn with a blind stitch after you put it on the pillow.
