Professor Colin Campbell formulated eight principles of proper diet based on his many years of research.
1. Nutrition is the combined effect of countless substances in food. Eating, we launch a complex system of chemical reactions in the body, aimed at extracting the maximum benefit from food in the form in which it exists in nature. To proclaim the benefits of one particular nutrient without considering it in conjunction with others is an oversimplified approach.2. Vitamin supplements are not a panacea for health. Optimum health is achieved not at the expense of individual nutrients, but at the expense of food in general, containing these substances. As Professor Campbell says, "If you want to get vitamin C or beta-carotene, don’t look for a jar of pills - look for fruits or green leafy vegetables". But there are exceptions. For vegetarians, for example, it is useful to periodically use vitamin B12 as a dietary supplement (after consulting a doctor). It is also recommended that vitamin D be regularly taken by those who spend a lot of time indoors and / or live in northern climates.
3. Almost all nutrients are better represented in plant foods. Animal nutrition in its nutritional composition is significantly different from vegetable. It contains, often in excess, fats. And plant foods have a lot of antioxidants, fiber, and minerals.
4. Nutrition plays a key role in which genes appear: “good” or “bad”. Genes are responsible for our predisposition to certain diseases. Using nutrition, you can control the effect of "bad" genes, for example by adjusting the amount of animal protein in food.
5. Using nutrition, you can control the adverse effects of harmful chemicals on the body. Professor Campbell asks not to deceive those who eat organic beef, that it is healthier than regular, stuffed with chemistry. Indeed, in terms of their nutritional and chemical composition, these two products are similar.
6. The same nutrition that prevents the disease in the early stages (before diagnosis) can stop its development or cure it in the later stages. Proper nutrition helps improve health at every stage of the disease. Of course, the disease is easier to prevent than to cure. But those who are already sick should remember the importance of diet. So, eating whole plant foods helps obese people lose weight.
7. Nutrition, which is useful in the case of one chronic disease, will help in the prevention of many other diseases. Eating whole plant foods has a beneficial effect on overall well-being.
8. Proper nutrition is beneficial for different areas of our existence, since they are all interconnected. Thus, the concept of a healthy diet supports physical activity, and in many respects provides emotional and intellectual health.
