This uniform collar is an integral part of the naval uniform. It was introduced in the Russian fleet at the end of the XIX century. It is found today in ordinary clothes, as a stylizing detail of the whole image.
History of occurrence
There are two versions of the appearance of a sailor collar. According to one of them, sailors were supposed to wear wigs, and grease the ends of the braids with tar. Naturally, pigtails touched clothes and stained them. For the untidy appearance of the sailors were punished, that's why they came up with a kind of collar from a skin flap, which was worn over a sailor's shirt.
According to another version, the sailor's collar was transformed from an ordinary hood, which protected the sailors from sea spray in windy weather.
